Switzerland is so much more than cuckoo clocks, cheese and chocolates! It’s a cliche that Switzerland is best-known for cuckoo-clocks, expensive watches, chocolate, cheese and incredibly useful pen-knives. Whilst these icons give the briefest insights into this diverse and fascinating country, we would love to help you to get to know and understand the four very different regions that make up the Swiss Confederation, or Confoederatio Helvetica (CH), even better. There are four very diverse areas and nationalities – don’t imagine that the German-speaking part of Switzerland has that much in common with its next-door-neighbour.
The Swiss-German dialect is close to being a different language. In contrast, the Swiss-Romane speak one of the purest forms of French that you could wish to hear, but the people are as chalk and cheese to the French themselves.
The Italian-speaking region enjoys a beautiful climate for large parts of the year, but has a very different culture and cuisine to the rest of the country.
The small but very proud Romansch region has its own language and heritage that it fosters proudly. The mountains of the Bernese Oberland are really even more spectacular than their postcards.
The Matterhorn does look like a piece of chocolate bar. The chalets do look like musical boxes. Zurich and Geneva ooze affluence, and, despite the challenges of its terrain, Switzerland does have one of these most punctual, efficient, and well-integrated public transport systems in the world.
